It's become increasingly apparent that right at this moment in time, inclusivity and respect are an integral aspect of our personal and professional lives. Actually, it's the lack thereof that's most concerning, so seemingly small acts like using the correct pronouns for people is a simple yet powerful way to show consideration and allyship.
Pronouns are more than just words; they are an essential part of a person’s identity. Misusing or ignoring someone’s pronouns can make them feel unseen, disrespected, or invalidated. On the other hand, using the correct pronouns fosters respect, builds trust, and creates a welcoming environment for everyone.
Using the right pronouns matters because it affirms a person’s identity. For many transgender and nonbinary people, being referred to by the right pronouns can be validating and contribute to their sense of self. It is also a fundamental act of respect and inclusivity, showing that you care about someone’s identity and are committed to fostering a welcoming environment.
Language has a profound impact on mental health, and studies have shown that using correct pronouns and names for transgender and nonbinary individuals can significantly reduce anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation. Ensuring people are addressed properly helps create a supportive space where they feel valued and acknowledged.
Many workplaces and institutions now recognize the importance of pronouns and encourage their proper use. Failing to use them correctly can not only strain relationships but also lead to professional consequences in environments that prioritize inclusivity and diversity. A commitment to using correct pronouns is an important step toward ensuring equity and respect for all individuals.
While many people are familiar with traditional pronouns, gender diversity means that there are several pronouns in use today. Here’s a quick reference guide, but it's by no means exhaustive - there are many, many other pronouns that people use.
He/Him/His – Used for someone who identifies as male.Example: He is going to the store. I borrowed his book.
She/Her/Hers – Used for someone who identifies as female.Example: She loves coffee. That jacket is hers.
They/Them/Theirs – A singular, gender-neutral pronoun used for nonbinary individuals or when gender is unknown.Example: They are coming to the party. I borrowed their pen.
Ze/Zir/Zirs – A gender-neutral pronoun set.Example: Ze is working on a project. That book is zirs.
Ey/Em/Eirs – Another gender-neutral pronoun set.Example: Ey is a great musician. I love eir performance.
The LGBTQIA Research Center at UC Davis has a good list of other pronouns here, and the Gender Wiki has even more here.
Adding your pronouns to your social media profiles, email signatures, and Zoom display name is a small but impactful step toward normalizing discussions around gender identity. When people see pronouns in your bio, it signals that you respect and support gender inclusivity. Many people feel more comfortable sharing their pronouns when they see others doing the same, reducing the fear of being singled out.
Displaying pronouns also helps others refer to you correctly, avoiding assumptions and misgendering. Even if you are cisgender (your gender identity aligns with your sex assigned at birth), including your pronouns demonstrates allyship and shows solidarity with transgender and nonbinary individuals.
Pronouns may seem like a small detail, but their correct usage has a profound impact on creating a respectful and inclusive society. Which, let's face it, is something we desperately need right about now. By making an effort to use the right pronouns, educating ourselves, and normalizing the practice of sharing pronouns, we take meaningful steps toward affirming everyone’s identity. It doesn't matter if you personally feel it's important for other people to get your pronouns right - this is about showing support and making all the spaces we're in, both online and offline, more inclusive. One little pronoun at a time.
